Fra EP Rinkside: The 10 best single-game performances from the 2024 World Juniors preliminary round
Number 10
Stian Solberg, D, Norway (2024 NHL Draft) Dec 29 vs. Slovakia
Key metrics:
7 shots (0.7 xG) 3 controlled exits 4 controlled exits 4 cross-lane transition passes 6 defensive zone breakups 2.15 game score
The Stian Solberg experience was one of the highlights of the preliminary round. It didn't matter the level of competition or score, he – along with Team Norway – came to crack skulls and make plays. No game epitomized that more than his outing against Slovakia.
At one end, Solberg threw bone-crushing hits. At the other, he activated consistently, leading to a fast-break goal off the rush. In between, he slipped pucks through opponents on the forecheck, creating time and space up the rink. He's patient yet plays with pace, knowing when to delay for a better look and when to push full steam ahead. There are turnovers, but that's the cost of doing business on a team that didn't let their lack of firepower deter them from engaging in a track meet.
Throughout the preliminary round, Solberg's defensive skating proved costly off the rush. This game was no different. He backs off too much and then commits his weight to the outside too early when the attacker arrives. But he shows lots of competency in-zone, where he steadily traps opponents along the boards and sends them flying.
The skating, handling, and play selection must improve to make the NHL, but this game showed that Solberg is worthy of consideration inside the top two rounds.
